Marjorie Christian Schley
Mrs. Richard L. Schley, Jr.
Marjorie Christian Schley Mrs. Richard L. Schley, Jr. died peacefully on the evening of December 11, 2006. Born on April 15, 1925, in Boston, Massachusetts, Marjorie was the daughter of Dr. Thomas Davis Christian, Jr. and Marjorie Downs Christian. She grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, where she graduated from Edward Christian Glass High School before completing additional high school education at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, Virginia. An outstanding student and student leader, she attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia, where she served as the president of student government, and graduated in 1946 with a major in Physics and a minor in Latin. Following college, she married Dr. Richard L. Schley, Jr., who had returned from serving in World War II to complete his medical residency training in New York. They moved to his native Savannah in 1949 and Marjorie began a lifetime of serving the Savannah community where her organizational skills and intelligence were well known and highly appreciated.
For a short period, she served as a teacher at Savannah Country Day School, teaching first grade, and then later, advanced math, as well as Latin, to senior high school students. Her love of language and math continued throughout her life and was always evident in her abilities to quickly complete jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Marjorie spent many years in the real estate business, first with Esther Wynne Realty, and later as a member of the David Byck Realty firm. She also served a term as president of the Junior League of Savannah, and served innumerable civic and charitable organizations in officer positions, most often as treasurer, including the Savannah Town Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
A devoted wife, mother and citizen, and an independent woman with a marvelous wit, Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years, Dr. Richard L. Schley, Jr. She is survived by her children, their spouses and her grandchildren: Christian Schley and Dr. John Teichgraeber of Houston, Texas, and their daughters, Dr. Davis C. Teichgraeber and Larcombe S. Teichgraeber; Jean Campbell and Dr. Dwight Campbell, of Lowville, New York and Savannah, and their children, D. Thomas Campbell, Julian S. Campbell, and Eleanor E. Campbell; Carolyn Stone and Dr. Joel Stone, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and their daughters, Marjorie M. Stone, Emily M. Stone, and Elizabeth A. Stone; and Richard L. Schley, III and Regina Schley of Savannah, and their children, Christian G. Schley and Gordon M. Schley. She is also survived by a half-sister, Virginia Mowery Mallette, of Belhaven, North Carolina.
